Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the area of a proposed windfarm development lying to the north of Alyth at Drumderg Hill, Perthshire. A walkover survey was undertaken of the proposed development area, which was followed by topographical survey of an area of cultivation remains and evaluation of the areas around three proposed turbine sites, a borrow pit, tracks and clearance features. In total, forty-three trial trenches totalling 2,460 m2 were excavated over c. 4.9 ha of hill pastureland. No artefacts were identified within the clearance structures, which may date to either the late prehistoric or medieval/post-medieval periods. A watching brief was also undertaken on the excavation of a cable trench to the south of the windfarm, which exposed the remains of a wall, part of a post-medieval rectilinear building. A further watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of a road way which crossed an area of rig and furrow (site 49) close to turbine 9. The watching recorded the rig and furrow remains. No artefacts were recovered.
