Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC as part of the Site Investigation Works on farmland to the north of Carnoustie. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 39 trenches across the site. All the trenches were excavated down to natural alluvial deposits with a large number of tile and rubble field drains recorded. A number of shallow linear channels and ditches plus a few pits were recorded across the site, the majority of which seemed to be associated with agricultural activity. Artefacts were only recovered from four of the recorded features. One of the main ditches recorded was found in a number of the trenches, the fill of which included a number of sherds of 19th century pottery. Two possible hammerstones were recovered from two separate pits and two fragments of abraded red ceramic were recovered from within the fill of a ditch recorded at the southern end of the site. At least three of the trenches located a field boundary ditch recorded on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey |
