Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken at the rear of the Roses, Akeley, Buckinghamshire in June 2005 prior to the construction of an access drive designed to serve a number of house due for construction at a later date. The excavation confirmed the presence of 11th century archaeological features noted in a prior evaluation (Ivens, 2004). The discovery of two sherds of early/mid Saxon pottery extend the known spatial extent of activity of this date northwards from a single findspot ca. 250m to the south. Features verifying the presence of 13th-14th century tenement plots fronting Main Street were not revealed. An archaeological watching brief was carried out by ASC Ltd in June and July 2006 during trenching to reroute two foul sewers, replacement of a storm drain and excavation of two level platforms and the footings of two houses at the rear of a bungalow called The Roses, Akeley, Buckinghamshire. An archaeological evaluation at The Roses in 2003 revealed 11th-14th century archaeological features buried beneath c.1.8m of sediment infilling a deep natural depression (Ivens 2003).
