Abstract: |
The project consisted of a watching brief on all ground works at The Old Barn, Darley Abbey, Derby. The existing 19th century barn is a timber framed structure with brickwork infill panels. The development entailed dismantling the exisiting barn and reconstructing it re-using all sound original material for use as a new outdoor education centre. The building falls within the Darley Abbey Conservation Area and is in an area with a number of entries on the Site and Monuments Record (SMR). The site sits within the lands of the former Augustinian abbey (SMR 18903). The abbey, formed c. 1146, was dissolved in 1538 leaving very little evidence of it's whereabouts, size and layout. This has led to some current uncertainity regarding the exact location of the abbey buildings. |
