Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Archaeological Research Services Ltd on behalf of the Chatsworth House Trust during the installation of sculptures for display at the 2008 exhibition. This required observation of ground excavation at three different locations. An area of made ground (area 1) which produced a collection of pottery and other small finds was excavated by hand by archaeologists from Archaeological Research Services Ltd. The assemblage of pottery consisted of 487 sherds, predominantly of horticultural wares with a small quantity of refined earthenwares dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. One sherd of medieval pottery dating to between the later 11th and early 13th centuries was also found. A culvert revealed in area 3 can be identified on an 1858 plan of Chatsworth gardens. |
