Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East were commissioned by Rolfe Judd Architecture to carry out an archaeological evaluation in advance of redevelopment at 29-35 High Street, Crawley, West Sussex (NGR TQ 26770 36510). Nine trial trenches were mechanically excavated under archaeological supervision. Remains from two broad periods were identified: late medieval/post-medieval and 19th century/modern. A possible smelting furnace dating to mid 14th to 15th century was identified, together with a mid/later 15th- to mid 16th-century pit containing iron-working slag. Three undated pits, probably associated with iron-working, and a single feature associated with early/mid 19th-century iron-working were also recorded. Several brick walls and brick foundations probably relating to the late Victorian/Edwardian redevelopment of the area were recorded. |
