Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between May and June 2010 at Old Park Farm, Pinhoe, Devon. A total of sixty three trenches was excavated. The evaluation identified a number of archaeological features within the proposed development area. The majority of these features were concentrated within Areas 4, 6 and 7, with a lessening of archaeological activity within Areas 1, 2, 3 and 5. The earliest features encountered consisted of a pit within trench 14 which contained sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery, and a ditch in trench 37 which contained prehistoric pottery. A ring-ditch, with a projected internal diameter of 15m, was identified within trench 40. Although no closely dateable material was recovered from this feature a Bronze Age date is postulated for its construction. Ditches dating to the Roman period were identified within the south-eastern part of the site. These form a postulated north-west/south-east orientated field system. These ditches have a distinctive profile; with steep sides and a flat base, however their function could not be determined. Evidence for medieval activity comprised ditches containing 12th to 14th-century pottery and a later medieval horseshoe, as well as the remains of furrows. Post-medieval or modern features relating to agricultural activity and land division were identified across the site.
