Abstract: |
Building record of three Listed late 18th century structures built inside a chalk pit by Samuel Whitbread (part of the brewing family), owner of the quarry for his workers. They comprise a chapel of ease (1791), schoolhouse and school master's house (both 1790), built in yello/grey brick with slate roofs, the chapel and schoolhouse characterised by tall arched recessed panels around the windows. Shown on oil painting of 1796 (G. Garrard RA) but now derelct for 30+ years, vandalised, etc. Chapel converted to a house in 1920s, destroying interior. Interior of school replaced by Arts and Crafts interior, now poorly-surviving. School master's house largely unaltered but only minor fixtures and fittings remain, some of which are probably 19th century in date. Godd group value with Hollow Cottages to south, early example of workers housing in Essex, built at the same time and still occupied. |
