Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land at the Anglo-American Playing Field, Saffron Walden, in advance of the construction of a new sports pitch. The evaluation comprised of two 1.6m wide machine-excavated trenches. The land at the south east end of Trench 1 was truncated with thin topsoil directly overlying flinty chalk. To the west, the overburden got progressively thicker with natural deposits of brown silt and flinty gravel separating topsoil from chalk. Land at the north western end of the trench was substantially built-up with layers of modern silt and chalk rubble overlying buried topsoil. No archaeological remains were encountered. The northeast end of Trench 2 was also truncated with natural chalk beneath a thin layer of re-deposited topsoil. To the southwest, the natural chalk with patches of orange brown silt was overlain by mid to dark brown silt, with up to 0.30m of topsoil above that. The boundary between the truncated and un-truncated parts of the trench was apparent as a distinct slope extending across the grass on a north westerly alignment. This perpetuated the line of an underlying boundary ditch containing sherds of residual post-medieval pottery along with nine sherds dating to the later 19th/20th century. Although prehistoric and Roman remains are known in the vicinity of the site no remains of this date were identified in the evaluation. Similarly, there was no archaeological evidence for medieval or early post-medieval development or other activity beyond the northern limit of the town enclosure.
