Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out on ground reduction. On the W side of the site, natural clay was overlain by re-deposited clay containing brick fragments which may relate to the demolition of 19th century buildings. This was sealed by a concrete slab and two parallel E-W aligned brick walls which are probably associated with a furniture workshop shown on the 1935 Ordnance Survey map of the area. Above these were demolition rubble and a modern concrete slab. In the NW of the site, natural clay was cut by an undated brick culvert and brick-lined well. In the SW of the site, foundations consisting of compacted gravel with fragments of brick, mortar and glass were exposed. These are probably related to buildings shown on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map of the area. On the E part of the site, natural gravel was covered by 20th century demolition rubble which was sealed by the concrete slab, which is consistent with the area being open during the 19th-early 20th-century. In the SE of the site, an undated brick-lined well was recorded.
