Abstract: |
Three areas were stripped in an area that had previously been evaluated. The excavations revealed an early Roman enclosure and evidence for Roman masonry buildings, though it was clear that only one corner of the enclosure had survived, the rest having been destroyed by the construction of the M1 motorway. The central and east side of the large east-west ditch (forming one side of the enclosure) had multiple re-cuts, indicating quite extensive use during a relatively small period of time - the pottery gives an end date for the site of the mid C2nd. Of interest at this early date is the amount of Roman building material, with brick and tile common, and slate also utilised. This suggests the presence of stone buildings in the vicinity, which may have been within the area destroyed by the construction of the M1. |
