Abstract: |
North Pennines Archaeology Ltd were commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land adjacent to the Walled Garden at Kirkleatham, Redcar, Teesside (NGR NZ 5960 2165). This work was undertaken to inform on a planning application at the site. The evaluation involved the excavation of nine trenches, totalling 420m2 in total of a 3.6ha site. Archaeological remains were identified in eight of the nine trenches, and comprised ditches, gullies and possible pits and postholes, all of a potential medieval date. The remains are interpreted as relating to the village of Kirkleatham which was cleared in the 17th century following gentrification of the landscape. |
