Abstract:
An evaluation had been undertaken by AOC Archaeology in December 2006, the results of which lead to two small open area excavations which were conducted in February 2007. The earliest significant phase of activity on the site occurred during the medieval period and mainly consisted of a series of linear ditches. Some of these functioned as enclosure ditches whilst one is likely to have functioned as a drainage channel. The lack of associated features suggests the site was not occupied during the medieval period and its sole function was as enclosed farm or pasture land. The most substantial group of archaeological remains found on the site belongs to the post-medieval period. Two linear ditches were dated to this period which continues the themes of enclosure and drainage. Also on site during this period were a number of small domestic refuse pits and possible cess pits. These suggest that the use of the site changed during the post-medieval period, becoming the dumping for the local population.
