Abstract:
This document summarises the results of the archaeological excavation carried out during January 2010 by Archaeology South-East on land at Steyning Grammar School, School Lane, Steyning, West Sussex (NGR TQ 17847 11230). The archaeological work was commissioned by RLF on behalf of their client West Sussex County Council (WSCC). The potential of the site for further analysis is discussed and a publication synopsis outlined. Quantification of the resources needed to achieve this work has been undertaken. Although six periods of activity were identified at the site, the majority of activity represented at the site is of 11th - 13th century AD occupation, and mostly includes Saxo-Norman evidence of ditches and pitting. The earliest remains encountered during the excavations were residual pottery sherds of Late Saxon (c. mid 9th - late 10th century) date which were present in later Saxo-Norman deposits. This would suggest nearby earlier activity. Less archaeological activity is evidenced on the site from the mid 13th century onwards which may be the result of the expansion of Shoreham's coastal port and a reflected decline in activity at the rive-based port at Steyning. There was a dearth of archaeological activity at the site from the 14th to mid 16th century, although a number of residual finds dated to this period would suggest that manuring activity was occurring on the site during this period. Natural weathered chalk/clay marl geology was encountered across the site at 14.94m AOD in the west falling away to 12.9m AOD in the east.
