Abstract:
This archaeological desk-based assessment was commissioned as part of the consideration of demolition and new building work at St. George's Farm, Old Windsor, Berkshire. This study highlights the potential for archaeological remains relating to the prehistoric periods within the entire area of the estate. Artefacts dating from the Mesolithic, through the Neolithic, Bronze Age and into the Iron Age show a continued use of the river and its environs. While Roman remains are known in the area the chance of them being present in the site is though to be low. It is likely the area was under agriculture during this period. Field systems of this date are known to the northeast and there is the potential for a farm to the south. A Saxon Royal Palace is located just to the south of the site. There is a high possibility that a nucleated settlement radiating from the church and associated with the palace could potentially lie within the site boundary. Archaeological remains of the post-medieval period are unlikely to be present in the area. The entire area lies with a Scheduled Ancient Monument and this is legally protected. No work should be undertaken without consultation from the appropriate bodies and authorities.
