Abstract: |
Three evaluation trenches were opened as part of the preparations for the Museum of Somerset project. The two to the west (one inside the building) showed that numerous pits had been dug in the area in the early C18. No intact medieval deposits were seen and very few medieval finds made. No burials (or human bone) was recovered in contrast to the situation immediately to the east. A possible robbing trench for the south wall of the earliest hall was seen, although this could also have been a pit. The trench to the east had been severely disturbed by modern services but intact medieval deposits were seen below this. The end of the courtyard wall was seen together with a later continuation on the same line. |
