Abstract:
A Watching Brief was requested by Edinburgh City Council Archaeology Service on groundbreaking works for the construction of a culvert as part of an ongoing flood defence scheme for the Braid Burn. The watching brief was required by CECAS as the 18th century Portobello pottery, brick and tile works, once stood adjacent to the development area to the west. Building remains were found at the north end of the excavation. It is probable that these remains represent the basements or cellars of buildings depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition Town Plan. A number of pits containing pottery and pottery dumps were found along the course of the culvert excavation. The pottery and glass from these dumps has been assessed by George Haggerty. These dumps of material were found within ground that had been built up with demolition material. The pottery finds were dated to the 1950s and in the main were manufactured by Buchan's pottery works.
