Abstract: |
Monitoring and investigation during the construction of an extension to an existing house. 3.1 The DA lies immediately east of Watling Street and c. 500m south of the southern wall for Verulamium Roman Town. A search of St Albans Urban Archaeological Database (UAD) has been undertaken. The search was conducted for an area of 250m radius centred on the site and recorded 59 records for the area. The majority of these records relate to Roman and Iron Age activity and although the site lies outside the walls of Verulamium, it is located within an area of high archaeological potential. Many of the records relate to investigations along King Harry Lane and indicate a well settled, well-used stretch of land along a major Roman highway, immediately south of a major Roman town. 3.2 The most relevant UAD records, and those which have prompted the condition for these works, are HER14155, HER6580 and HER4704. These records record the location of what is in effect the same archaeological site (St Stephens/King Harry Lane Roman cemetery) which has been the subject of several investigations. The current works involved monitoring the excavation of a foundation trench. No archaeological deposits were encountered. |
