Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation was undertaken over three days between the 8th December and the 10th December 2010. The evaluation involved the excavation of two trenches, totalling 27.05m2 of the development area. It was clear that the proposed development site has been heavily disturbed in the past, probably during the construction, and subsequent demolition of the Old Castle Cinema. However, several features were revealed which probably related to the tannery, including a stone-line culvert . Furthermore, the dating and stratigraphy of these features suggest that they belong to two separate phases of the tannery. The dating of one of these features places the tannery within the early/mid-eighteenth century. |
