Abstract:
Oxford Archaeology North was commissioned by Jacobs Babtie, on behalf of the Environment Agency, to carry out an archaeological evaluation of the proposed repair and improvements to the existing Flood Alleviation Scheme, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, running parallel to Derby Road (NGR SK 2550 2600) and to the north of Meadow Lane (NGR SK 2624 2613). The archaeological programme of work was required in order to identify any areas of archaeological interest that might be affected by the proposed scheme, following the results of a desk-based assessment carried out by Jacobs Babtie in 2004. The evaluation took six days and was carried out in December 2005. In total, seven features of archaeological significance were located within the Derby Road site. Precise dating of the features of archaeological potential was not possible as most of the finds were from within the topsoil. Consequently, the course of the Roman Road of Ryknild Street remains inconclusive. The proposed repairs and improvements will probably have an impact on the archaeological features found towards the north-east of the Derby Road site. To this end, further work within the vicinity of Trenches 5-10, where the presence of subsoil was revealed, thus protecting the archaeology to some degree from modern farming methods, should be carried out under conditions of an archaeological watching brief. The course of the Roman road north of Meadow Lane has not been verified and, therefore, it is recommended that further groundworks in this area may require an archaeological watching brief.
