Abstract: |
Following a watching brief in relation to the Thames Water Victorian Mains Replacement Programme and the discovery of brick walls, a field investigation of two sections of a trench in the north-eastern part of the road was undertaken. This revealed the remains of parts of major brick walls of the East India Company warehouse constructed in Seething Lane in the late 18th Century. Remains of other buildings were also uncovered d: these included a 19th Century public house and a possible ancillary building to the 17th Century Navy Office. Part of an inhumation was also uncovered, suggesting that the medieval St Olave's Church graveyard once extended across the present road. |
