Abstract: |
An investigation of a section of a trench along the southern part of Threadneedle Street was undertaken in July 2009 after the discovery of a medieval wall during a watching brief of the area undertaken in relation to the Thames Water Victorian Water-Mains Replacement Programme. This uncovered the remains of the southern wall of the Church of St Benet Fink, possibly relating to three different phases in the construction of the church. The earliest remains may date from before the 13th Century, followed by evidence for possible 13th Century widening of the wall undertaken by Robert Finke, and then possible evidence for the 17th Century 'Wren rebuild' following the Great Fire, when the church was constructed on a different alignment and in a different shape. |
