Abstract: |
A trench evaluation and subsequent watching brief was carried out prior to and during refurbishment works to the hotel, a former Victorian eye infirmary. The site lies outside the south gate to the Roman and medieval town, in an area thought to have contained Civil War defensive outworks. Two trenches were excavated and a subsequent bulk excavation was monitored. No significant features or deposits were exposed and no evidence of civil war activity was present. The results were incoporated into a revised report on building recording carried out at the hotel in 2000. |
