Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on engineering works at Corbridge Bridge, Northumberland. The bridge is classified as a 'Scheduled Ancient Monument' and all intrusive groundworks were undertaken with Scheduled Monument Consent. The initial phase of investigations comprised a watching brief on the hand excavation of trial holes. The earliest archaeological deposits recorded dated to the 17th century and comprised masonry representative of the intrados of arch barrels located at the crown of Span 4 and Span 7. Potentially contemporary was an area of metalled surface which represents a pre-19th century road surface spanning the bridge. Evidence of alteration to the bridge in the 19th century comprised masonry thought to represent part of cantilever extensions associated with the widening of the bridge at this time. The remainder of the deposits dated to the modern era and comprised service trenches, made ground, a concrete sub-base and a layer of tarmac associated with modification/maintenance of the bridge during the 20th century. The secondary phase of archaeological watching brief monitored mechanical coring of boreholes. The earliest deposits encountered comprised deposits of sandstone blocks and cement which may represent part of the structural fabric of Pier 1 and Pier 3 or an episode of backfilling. Post-dating the earlier material were deposits comprised of gravels, cobbles and sandstone blocks, representative of backing material for Spans 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. It is unknown to what phase of activity the early deposits dated, however the uppermost deposits comprised made ground, a concrete sub-base and a layer of tarmac associated with modification/maintenance of the bridge during the 20th century.
