Abstract:
In August 2010, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted an archaeological evaluation on land adjacent to 25 St Giles Close, Holme, Cambridgeshire (NGR TL 1902 8777). The evaluation was conducted in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the construction of eight residential dwellings (Planning Ref. 0801163FUL). The site abuts an area to the north and west that contained Iron Age and Roman ditches, domestic waste and pottery and also probable late medieval fishponds. It was thought ikely that these features continued into the evaluation area. Despite the high potential for Iron Age and Roman archaeology, only medieval remains were revealed. The features were much truncated by ploughing with only the bases surviving intact. The sparse finds and heavily-abraded nature of the pottery suggests that these features were not domestic but may have been associated with the medieval fishponds and/or agriculture.
