Abstract:
Between August 2007 and December 2007, Archaeological Solutions (AS) Limited carried out an archaeological open area excavation on land at Church Street, St Neots. The excavation revealed multi-period remains the earliest of which dated to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Romano-British features possibly representing a small agricultural settlement perhaps associated with the villa complex recorded near Eynesbury to the south. The main significance of the site was the Saxon and Saxo-Norman features that helped further characterise the known late Saxon settlement previously investigated by C.F. Tebbutt and later by P. V. Addyman. These features represented possible enclosures or paddocks within the enclosed area of the settlement. The occupational activity that Addyman predicted would exist in this area was not present. Medieval activity would appear to be consistent with the site's position on the periphery of the medieval town The excavation revealed further remains of the important post-medieval dwelling of Hall Place that formerly lay towards the north of the site. Features understood to represent aspects of its gardens help to characterise the grounds of the former home. Other features of this date may relate to the period towards the end of the postmedievalperiod when the building was dismantled. The results of the excavation help to characterise this part of St Neots from the Anglo-Saxon period onwards and may be seen to accurately reflect the known history and development of the town whilst adding detail to the existing corpus of information.
