Abstract: |
Redevelopment of the car park to the east and south east of the existing store was monitored. Natural sandy brickearth was overlain by buried topsoil and post-medieval and later dumped deposits, sealed by modern tarmac. A number of residual pottery sherds and flint flakes and an animal skeleton were recovered from the upper layers. The excavation of piling pits in the loading bay revealed only modern material while an evaluation trench in the west wing of the store uncovered 20th-century pottery and glass and a circular brick structure (probably a drain) filled with modern concrete. In the car park area, truncated natural brickearth, overlain in places by natural sand was observed. Walls, drains and pits of probable 19th-20th century date were recorded, and only residual and re-deposited 18th-19th century glass and pottery was recovered. |
