Abstract: |
In April 2006, PCA carried out an evaluation at 2 Carpenters Place, Clapham, comprising three trenches located within the footprint of a proposed new development, inside the warehouse that currently occupies the site. The evaluation identified the presence of the Lynch Hill Gravel formation and an overlying clayey soil. Located above this was a horticultural horizon that was probably worked continuously from the 18th century, and possibly earlier, up to the early to mid 20th century. The existing warehouse was constructed at about this time, and several service trenches and concrete foundation rafts and ground beams were found that relate to this structure. |
