Abstract:		 Two trenches were excavated across the monument's bank and ditch to see if the nature and date of the original construction could be ascertained as well as details of any later usage and alterations. Trench 1 was excavated within the ditch and showed that the ditch has been re-excavated many times and backfilled with eroded material washing in. Two fills within the ditch contained late 12th to mid 14th century pottery, suggesting a medieval usage of the bank and ditch. Trench 2 was excavated to the southwest and showed a considerable amount of make-up gravel associated with the creation of the current green. However some very thin layers between the natural clay and modern gravel contained Roman pottery. It is unclear whether this represents the remainder of a pre-bank land surface, a remnant part of the bank itself or residual material deposited when the bank was truncated and the green created.
