Abstract:
The watching brief was intended to locate and record any Roman archaeology that may have survived between the ground beams associated with the construction of Block G. The natural sand and gravel was identified in all sections of the trench excavated. Above the sand, and at one location only, grit, gravel and sand deposits were encountered in section and are interpreted as being a remnant of the southern most limit of the London to Colchester road, an adjacent intrusion is interpreted as being part of the southern roadside drain. A layer of 20th century made ground sealed the rest of the site.
