Abstract:
During September 2011 an archaeological evaluation was undertaken during groundworks for the construction of a new Premier Inn on the former site of the Nurses accommodation at the General Lying-in Hospital, York Road, Lambeth. The evaluation covered two main areas; the excavation of a lift pit, to the north of the extant building and the reduction of ground in the former yard area to the west of the hospital buildings. The lift pit evaluation revealed several layers of naturally accumulated alluvial deposits representing the previous topography and environment of Lambeth Marsh. The yard area revealed a similar picture, with naturally accumulated alluvial clays and reworked gravels. The upper clays had been cut by a single, post-medieval drainage ditch, and the reworked gravels contained two pieces of worked flint, and several large pieces of wood, at least one of which was a worked timber plank.
