Abstract:
Evaluation was undertaken alongside the route of Ermine Street Romajn road, and in the area of a medieval Augustinian Friary and the Cromwell family home where Oliver Cromwell was born in 1599. The presnt Cromwell House on the site is early 19th century and listed Grade II. A sequence of medieval and later dumped deposits were encountered. These contained both Roman and medieval roofing tile, implying buildings of these periods nearby. A post-medieval brick structure, perhaps a cellar, was also revealed.
