Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May 2010 at Chantry Lane, Marlborough. Two trenches were excavated. A number of pits of varying size and depth were encountered during the excavation of the two trenches. Pottery retrieved from several of the pits suggests that they date from the 13th to 14th century. The finds recovered, which included pottery, tile and animal bone, suggest that the pits were used for waste disposal, although any alternative use prior to this cannot be discounted. Analysis of the palaeoenvironmental evidence from the pit fills identified cereal and other food crops, as well as charcoal from a range of species of tree. |
