Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering 8 hectares was carried out at the location of the proposed northern extension to Ripon Quarry. Anomalies caused by ridge and furrow ploughing and former field boundaries have been identified. These may be associated with the abandoned medieval village at East Tanfield 0.3km to the west of the site. Other linear boundary features, a rectangular enclosure and a linear series of discrete anomalies, that may be due to an alignment of pits, could be indicative of pre-medieval activity on the site. However, a more prosaic interpretation for these latter anomalies (a series of tree boles) could be equally plausible. The results of the geophysical evaluation confirm the view put forward in an archaeological assessment that this area has a moderate archaeological potential due to its topographical location. |
