Abstract: |
An earlier archaeological desk-based assessment (essexcou1-58183) identified the site as lying within Roman Chelmsford and reconstructed the local Roman topography. Five trial pits were excavated to test the assessment's model of deposit survival. These confirmed the line of the Roman road across the north of the site and recorded three main road metallings, as well as a sequence of brickearth floors on its north side, presumably related to a series of timber domestic buildings. A Roman buried soil was recorded across the south of the site, typical of a backyard area. The Roman strata were well preserved at a depth of at least 1.0m, sealed beneath a post-medieval cultivated soil. This was cut by brick foundations for outbuildings related to the original 1854 water works and its expansion in 1860-7, and the 1858 silk mill. |
