Abstract: |
A programme of standing building recording prior to and archaeological monitoring during the demolition of a multi-phased brick wall to the rear of the industrial estate on the site of the former Minerva Works, as part of public realm improvements. Historic mapping appears to show that in the late 19th century, not all of the canal side to the rear of Minerva Works was lined with a wall, although there were buildings to the north and south sides of the site, the centre was largely free of buildings presumably to allow goods to be loaded and unloaded from canal boats. The standing building survey revealed that the north and south ends of the present brick wall appear to contain elements of former buildings, although no architectural detail was noted. The footings for former buildings to the south side of the site were also noted. |
