Abstract:
The farm existed from 1780s; cartographic evidence that house may have occupied the site in 1775 and circumstantial evidence for a house as early as 1580s. House comprised three storey, three bay brick building w/sash windows and shallow hipped roof, overlooking garden w/trees, val pond enclosed by drive off Old Fallings Lane. Farmyard buildings lay to north, paddocks, orchard and possible formal garden occupied south-east (NGR: SJ 9268 0213). Farm owned and occupied by Phillips family through 18th and 19th C. In 1925 Low Hill Bushbury Estate Company Ltd sold it to Wolverhampton Corporation, who built schools to north-east 1930-3 and leased house to TOC H organisation. Farm demolished 1948 and land subsumed within school. Geophysics identified buried deposits associated w/house, eastern portion of farmyard and drive. Other elements may have been removed during demolition and landscaping. Also large number of irregular anomalies - cannot be ascribed to known buildings, nor dated. Blow ground archaeological potential is still somewhat indeterminate. Is recommended that further evaluation be undertaken w/trial trenches across anomalies and sample of blank areas plus monitoring of any geotechnical investigations. Oiginal school buildings are typical 1930s public building style; are integral to surrounding housing estate of later 1920s/early 1930s. They have group value as part of sub-urban landscape. The recurring circular glazing bar motif design in windows is unusual and potentially unique. Is recommended that recording by undertaken of these buildings.
