Abstract:
An archaeological investigation was undertaken at the site of Canning Town Regeneration Area 7 consisting of a geoarchaeological assessment conducted by QUEST, and a two trench evaluation undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group. An assessment of the available geoarchaeological data indicated that the Holocene alluvium at the Canning Town site was affected by active channel migration throughout the prehistoric period. Due to the presence of active channel migration no long sediment sequences containing substantial palaeoenvironmental or archaeological remains are preserved or are likely to be preserved on site. The earliest feature encountered was of the partial outline of a 19th century pit. The pit, and the upper horizon of alluvial clay, had been sealed by a 19th or 20th century demolition horizon.
