Abstract: |
Wates Construction commissioned Wessex Archaeology to undertake a watching brief during groundwork in land adjacent to the De Warenne Academy, approximately centred on OS NGR SK 506 989. The removal of topsoil, 0.18m-0.37m in depth, revealed reddish brown sandy clay subsoil, varying between 0.3m-1.4m in depth. This subsoil overlay weathered limestone bedrock natural geology observed between 0.76m-1.77m below ground level. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout the site with the exception of Test Pit 8 where 0.36m of topsoil overlay subsoil 3.94m in depth. Limited investigation revealed no archaeological features or deposits. Finds were only recovered from the topsoil and were limited to a post-medieval ceramic sherd and two fragments of metallurgical slag. |
