Abstract:		 The remaining c.3,580m2 of the area available for gravel extraction at the quarry formerly known as Hill Pit was stripped of its topsoil in the March of 2011. The archaeological deposits revealed were excavated and recorded with the results forming the basis of this report which was compiled with reference to the archaeology previously recorded in an adjacent area of the quarry in 2003, where it formed part of an Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund grant aided project. In addition to a few pits of later Neolithic/earlier Bronze Age date, prehistoric features included four post structures of indeterminate Bronze Age or Iron Age date and two unurned cremations: one radiocarbon dated to the Late Neolithic and the other to the Middle - Late Bronze Age. A single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from a possible four post-structure. A group of Early Anglo-Saxon features were thought to represent occupation deposits that may have been responsible for the generation of a broadly contemporary cemetery known from c.250m to the south-east of the FLN 009 site. Previously partially excavated in 2003, the remaining part of a square enclosure ditch was recorded. No further dating evidence was recovered and its original interpretation as a possible folly structure associated with Flixton Hall and dating from sometime during the period spanning the 17th to early 19th century remains valid. Other post-medieval features related to the World War I training camps known to have taken place in Flixton Park and to quarrying activities.
