Abstract: |
The gas works at Arthington was established in 1876 by the North Eastern Railway for its own supply of coal gas to be used on trains, at local stations and perhaps in the nearby Bramhope tunnel, but the facility was closed in 1905. The surviving visible remains comprise the retort house, chimney and gasholder pit, and although all gasmaking plant has been removed, the site's original function is readily discernible. |
