Abstract: |
A watching brief was kept on 1 December 2011 during the removal of topsoil and other materials from an area measuring 14.5m by 7.5m, in advance of the construction of a new house on Queen's Close. Up to 0.5m of topsoil overlay sand, stained dark by the soil above, of which a further 0.4-0.9m was removed. The upper 0.2m of the sand contained charcoal and a few fragments of animal bone but no artefacts; the sand appeared to be undisturbed below this level. The boundary of the medieval burgh is believed to have cut across what is now Queen's Close but no trace of it or any other feature of archaeological significance was found in the trench. |
