Abstract:
A Standing Building Survey was undertaken at Brandon Cottage, Tiree prior to its demolition in advance of construction of a new structure. The historic building survey was carried out to Level 1 standard. The survey concluded the cottage was a typical example of 19th century vernacular architecture on the island of Tiree. Subsequent to the demolition of the cottage, an archaeological watching brief was undertaken to monitor the removal of any existing foundations of the structure. In addition, further archaeological monitoring took place during ground reduction within the area of the footprint of the new building. Monitoring also included the excavation of two test pits and a trench for the installation of the new septic tank. Excavations did not reach sufficient depth to uniformly expose archaeologically sterile natural subsoil. The full depth for the purposes of the development was reached and only modern material (contemporaneous with or post-dating the cottage) was exposed.
