Abstract:
Between November 2011 and January 2012 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at Piggott School, Twyford Road, Wargrave, Berkshire (NGR SU 7835 7745). The monitoring was commissioned by Foremans Relocatable Building Systems in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of a two-storey Sixth Form Centre with changes to car parking and hardstanding, relocation of cycle shelters and the removal of a temporary PE building within the site. The site is situated in the Thames river valley, to the south of the centre of Wargrave. It is occupied by Piggott School which is a Church of England academy. The site had a potential for prehistoric and Romano-British archaeological remains. Monitoring and recording was undertaken to ensure the in situ preservation of archaeological remains. In the event no archaeological features or finds were present within horizons penetrated by the limited groundworks. Further groundworks did not penetrate these levels and preservation in situ of any archaeological remains present will have been achieved in these areas.
