Abstract: |
Between 11th and 12th March 2013, Oxford Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief at St Bartholomew's Church, Ducklington (NGR SP 3589 0758). The monitored groundworks involved the excavation of a sump for a septic tank, in the western part of the graveyard, on the south side of the church tower. Aside from a quantity of disarticulated human bone, a total of 12 inter-cutting, in situ burials were revealed. Of the 12 skeletons, four were juveniles and eight were adults. The presence of coffin fittings, which included nails, upholstery studs, grips and coffin lace, indicated that these were post-medieval in date. Buttons and a shroud pin, indicative of funerary attire, were present in two burials. |
