Abstract:
Eamonn Wall and Co commissioned Alder Archaeology Ltd to undertake an archaeological walkover survey in advance of tree planting along the Drumshogle Burn (centred on NS 74700 90264) close to Murrayshall Farm, south-west of Stirling. The area was thought to possibly contain archaeological remains associated with the abandoned farmsteads of Shielbrae, Berryhill and Glenside. The walkover (site code ST24) was undertaken on the 31st of January 2012 in good weather conditions. At the east end of the site an area of gullies created by quarrying and a track possibly associated with the removal of the rock were recorded. Further to the south-west two low banks were identified which may have been the remains of field boundaries dating to the pre-improvement period. At the north-east end of the site, on a flattish area north of the burn, two areas of rig and furrow were found with rigs going in directions at a right angle to each other. These arable fields were probably infields cultivated by the people who lived at the farmsteads of Shielbrae or Glenside.
