Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising a programme of trial trenching was undertaken prior to residential development on land east of Potential House, Kirkgate, Tydd St Giles, Cambridgeshire, due to the archaeological potential of the site. The evaluation revealed three probable agricultural enclosure or drainage ditches on a roughly north-south alignment, two possible storage pits, an medieval date for them all is suggested, based on two small shreds of pottery of a 12th to 15th century date. The evaluation also recorded a large ditch 8.5m wide and 1.8m deep ditch or channel which contained post medeival brick fragments within its upper fills. This feature does not appear on early nineteenth century maps and may relate to a medieval land holding or represent a significant drainage feature. |
