Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation on land off Carey Close, Ely (TL 5507 8133) found sparse shallow ditches probably part of a field system belonging to a Middle Iron Age to Late Roman settlement 100m to the north of the subject site. Only a single Roman pottery sherd was recovered from one of the ditches. Of particular significance are two pits, c.10m to the east of a stream which flowed along the western boundary of the site. These pits contained large quantities of shattered burnt flint and sandstone pieces (16.7kg), fired clay (2.3kg), some of which showed evidence for structure, and 3 debitage flint flakes within their backfill. Their date is unknown but they are likely to be pre-Roman and possibly relate to cooking, a sauna or the production of temper for pottery production.
