Abstract:
Building record of large-scale traditional brewery established by the Ridley family in 1842 on the site of an earlier, smaller operation. The brewery was sold to Greene King in 2005 as a going concern and subsequently closed the following year and much of the important Victorian brewing equipment either removed to the Greene King museum or scrapped. In 2002 the complex was recommended in a comparative survey by ECC (Crosby 2002) for listing due to its high level of preservation. The current survey, in advance of conversion works for apartments and general redevelopment of the site, found that enough survives of the interior to understand the process flow of the tower brewery and that some important 19th century machinery and power drives remains in the more inaccessable areas.
