Abstract:
Building record (level 3) of a 19th century silk mill and water works, subsequently combined to become the headquarters of Essex and Suffolk Water, but now redundant. The west part of the site is important in its association with Marconi, since it became in 1898 the first radio factory in the world and has grade 2 statutory listing. Radio manufacture ceased in 1912 when Marconi moved to much larger premises in New Street, Chelmsford. The following buildings were recorded: the silk mill/radio factory, former mill manager's house, built in 1858 and the generator room (built c. 1854 and probably the original pump house) and the c.1900 pump house. All but the generator room have been converted to offices but the exteriors are well-preserved. Other buildings on the site have been lost over time. The best-preserved interiors are to the found in the borehole room of the pumphouse. A 1985 computer block was recorded to a lower level and is to be demolished. The buildings are to be retained as part of a housing development.
